High-speed pursuit from Belfast ends near Newry
A suspected car thief was arrested on the outskirts of Newry on Wednesday afternoon after a high-speed pursuit along the A1 from south Belfast. Police followed the vehicle as it travelled towards the city and used deliberate contact to bring it to a stop when the driver attempted a dangerous manoeuvre near the Carnbane roundabout.
Officers were alerted shortly before 2pm after a report that a grey Volkswagen Passat CC had been stolen from the Tates Avenue area of Belfast. The PSNI's Auto Crime Team moved to where the vehicle was last seen and tracked it southbound on the A1.
At about 2:15pm, members of the Auto Crime Team, assisted by the Armed Response Unit and Roads Policing Unit, attempted to stop the car near Dromore but the driver failed to comply. A pursuit continued along the main route towards Newry, with police believing the driver intended to travel towards the border.
Risky manoeuvre near Carnbane roundabout
As the Volkswagen approached Newry, the driver is alleged to have tried to turn and drive the wrong way on the on-slip at the Carnbane roundabout. Because that manoeuvre posed a significant danger to other road users, officers engaged in what the force described as a controlled form of contact to immobilise the vehicle.
"The actions of the officers has likely prevented the car thief from leaving the jurisdiction and prevented harm to any other road users had he continued further," the PSNI said.
The driver was arrested at the scene and was in police custody on Wednesday evening. He faces a series of suspected offences, all of which are being investigated by the PSNI.
