Young Cornish defender returns to county to continue development
Truro City have strengthened their back line with the addition of Jack Matthews, the 20-year-old defender who has joined the club after being released by Plymouth Argyle at the end of last season. Matthews has signed a one-year deal with an option to extend following a successful trial during pre-season.
Matthews, a Cornish-born player who progressed through Argyle's academy, made a solitary first-team appearance for the Pilgrims, coming on as a substitute late in extra time during the 4-1 FA Cup fourth-round defeat by Leeds United at Home Park in February 2024. He has gained his early senior experience through a series of loan spells with regional clubs.

“Pre-season has been a long four weeks so far but I have proven to the Gaffer (John Askey) that I am ready for this level and I can’t wait to get going,” Matthews said on trurocity.co.uk.

The club’s existing former Pilgrims include Tyler Harvey, Luke Jephcott and Ryan Law, and another recent signing, Lewis Colwell, also spent time as captain of Argyle’s under‑18s and had been on trial with Truro.

Matthews said that permanent football at Truro could “take my game to another level, by getting into the squad and playing as many games as I can.” He emphasised the need for consistent match time for a young defender looking to develop.
