Wrexham defender Zak Vyner has told supporters he is ready to push for more game time as the club embarks on a high-profile pre-season tour of the United States ahead of a second successive Championship season.
Ready to make an impression
Vyner, who joined Wrexham from Championship rivals Bristol City during the January transfer window, said the tour offers an opportunity to stake a claim in a squad preparing for competitive life at a higher level. The Red Dragons face Leeds United at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on Sunday 26 July, before taking on Liverpool in New York four days later. The tour concludes with a fixture against Sunderland in Philadelphia on Sunday 2 August.
Vyner spoke of his desire to help create selection dilemmas for manager Phil Parkinson by producing performances that force the boss to pick him. He arrived in the Gardens of Wales club in January on a permanent basis and has had to overcome a stop-start few months due to injury and adaptation to his new surroundings.
"I'm ready to go, I feel good, I feel fit,"
That short, clear declaration sums up Vyner's mindset. The 29-year-old explained that pre-season tours serve both physical and strategic purposes: fitness-building, tactical work and providing the manager with options ahead of the competitive campaign.
Settling off the pitch as well as on it
Vyner also underlined the non-playing challenges that come with moving clubs. This is the first time he has switched teams on a permanent basis, and he said there are many elements behind the scenes that supporters may not see — integrating into a new dressing room, a new coaching set-up and adapting to the culture of the club.
He conceded that such changes take time but said he already feels closer to his team-mates and ready to play his part:
"It's the first time I've moved to the new club that on a permanent basis and there's a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes that people don't really see."
Injury background and position
Vyner's introduction to life in a Wrexham shirt was interrupted. A toe injury delayed his early involvement, and he was later used in central midfield after his move. He missed the final five games of the previous season because of a groin problem, but he insists he is fit and prepared to take the opportunity the tour offers to regain full momentum.
- Objective: Earn more minutes and make the manager consider him for selection.
- Physical state: Says he feels fit and ready to play.
- Integration: Working on bedding in to the club and dressing-room culture.
Tour schedule
| Opponent | Date | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| Leeds United | Sunday 26 July | Raymond James Stadium, Tampa |
| Liverpool | Thursday 30 July | New York |
| Sunderland | Sunday 2 August | Philadelphia |
The itinerary will give Vyner and his team-mates exposure to tough opposition and busy fixtures in quick succession — the very demands that test squad depth and individual resilience before the Championship kicks off. For a club that has attracted considerable attention — both at home in north-east Wales and internationally — these matches also present a chance to showcase the growing identity of the side under the current regime.
Locally, supporters will be keen to see how Vyner's versatility is employed. He has experience across defensive positions and has been utilised in midfield at Wrexham. Whether he cements a starting berth in his preferred position will depend on how he performs during these US friendlies, and how quickly he can demonstrate the match sharpness missing at the end of last season.
For now, Vyner's message is straightforward and familiar to any Wrexham fan who has followed pre-seasons past: he is fit, he is eager and he intends to make the most of every minute on the field to help the club prepare for another Championship challenge.
